Started out on the lake, noticed tach not working and volt gauge low, cruising along then motor just died and started billowing smoke. Got towed back in and took a pic, not sure what has melted here but there is also considerable wiring melted as well. Wondering also if boat insurance will cover fires like this??

Any thoughts?

Common prob on the older OMC mtrs, voltage regulators had a habit of burning up.

Is that what that is? the voltage regulator, would that cause any other damage to the motor?

Thank-You

If the mtr quit running on you, you could also have ignition probs. Talk to your insurance co first and then take it into a good BRP dealer for damage estiminate.

Usually the first comeponet to fail and get hot is the Rectifier, which can short out wiring and take the Stator, voltage regulator or power pack with it. been their done that.
