We are not sure what year it is, but it is a 35 hp Mercury, somewhere in the area of 1988. Trying to get a spare engine going while I rebuilt another engine. I was going to change the exhaust plate gasket, pulled the engine. Then I noticed a lot of my old water pump propeller parts debris on the plate, which the dealer replaced for me. I won't say who, but they didn't clean the water port passage, so I pulled the shift mechanism and the plate to get the water tube out and clean it, which I was very successful, but when I installed the shifting mechanism I wanted to check to see if I was in neutral or where. to check the placement of the shift mechanism. When I turned it counter clockwise, I don't know if it went to far or what, but now I can't get it to come back clockwise where it is supposed to be. I have tried turning the propeller and shaft to no avail. Does anybody know what the problem could be? PLEASE HELP!! I WANT TO GO FISHING.
