Closing the big OMC hole in an Aluminum hull

I have a 1973 Crestliner Norseman that I want to convert from the OMC drive to Merc. I need to plug that big OMC hole. I could use some advice about how to rebuild the aluminum hull transom. It looks like I just need to weld in an aluminum patch and rebuild the wood transom, then recut for the merc. I've seen a lot about closing the big hole in fiberglass hulls but very little about aluminum hulls. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Sounds like you have the right idea. Seems like it'd almost be easier in aluminum.

SEI sells a Cobra-to-Merc conversion kit. Costs $350.
Not sure if it'll work with yours but might be worth looking into.

Going all aluminum sounds interesting. I'd have to look at the weight and costs differences.

He's got a stringer with the big hole. If it were a Cobra, the hole would be the same as a Merc already.
