1965 johnson lower unit problam

i have a 1965 johnson 60 hp model vxl-11c and it has been sitting for 10+ years the motor runs strong started no problam even after sitting but the gear case froze up so i took it apart and got every thing freed up but in the process the dog clutch has got taken off the prop shaft and i cant get the 2 bearing and the spring back in the shaft that the dog clutch moves over when u change gears.... i cant get the prop shaft out either which if i could get the shaft out i could get the bearings and spring in....my question is do i need those 2 ball bearings and the spring in there.. looks like that only thing they do is let you know when its in gear. and i dont see either of the bearings or the spring on any of the diagrams i have found for that motor......thanks
