Is there a "how to" video available showing the replacement of a 2005 40HP Mercury tilt motor?:

Re: 40HP Tilt motor replacement

way too early for that motor to go out. you sure its broken?

remove unit from engine. there is one long cross bolt on bottom and a mounting pin at top. brace engine securely to avoid loss of fingers, hands, or head. once removed put trim system in bench vice and carefully remove socket bolts holding oval shaped base onto reservoir. do not allow debris to fall into fluid. do not remove old motor until new one is handy. once bolts are out lift motor straight up. there is a loose fitting that goes bettwen motor shaft and pump shaft. be careful to properly engage with new motor. install new motor and screws. bolts should be secure but not overtightened. use bolts with locking patch or use regular bolts with locktight to prevent loosening with vibration.

Re: 40HP Tilt motor replacement

Apparently the tilt motor was painted with black bottom paint before I bought the unit in March of 2011. The marina mechanics recommended that the tilt motor be replaced due to the galvanic action between the paint and the motor's metal housing. The tilt motor does in fact work and the replacement is a preventitive measure. Thanks for your help.

He's blowing smoke up your tailpipe. Galvanic corrosion is caused by the reaction between stainless and aluminum. If you look closely at your trim system you will see that it uses plastic bearings on the bottom shaft which isolates the system from you sacrificial anode. Install mercury P/N 88238A18 between one of the bolts holding motor onto trim system and engine block (or other solidly grounded place). Some engine have an anode on bottom of transom brackets. If yours does then that is better place to attach other end of continuity strap.
