I have a 98 Johnson Fast Strike model# J115FTLECS. I am having issues with the starter pinion gear not engaging with the flywheel. Anyone had this issue? I have replaced the starter also has a new battery. The gear does not show excessive wear, kinda at a loss here! Sometimes it will engage, most times it will not. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Mind did the same thing an I just cleaned the shaft with brake cleaner and it started working. When you replaced the starter was it with a new one or a used one? A new one wouldent need to be cleaned so if thats the case it would likely be a different issue.

Its possible the pinion is slipping on the shaft. I can remove the crank sensor and look down while the engine is cranked and see the gear turning, it just does not look like the gear is moving up the shaft to the flywheel. Starter is a new Johnson starter. I have tried cleaning the pinion shaft, did not help it. This has been an ongoing issue for quite some time. It just seems to keep getting worse and worse.
