Re: merc starter

I have to diy job on this starter in remote location. Has anyone done the merc 4.3L starter job? I am wondering the best way to get leverage/access to the mounting bolts.

What is the socket size required for bolts on starter?

Re: merc starter

Socket size is either 9/16" or 1/2" depends on which bolts were installed.
The main nut for the battery cable is 13mm. The small terminal is 5/16" (8mm).

Access depends on the boat. I have one that requires an engine pull to even touch the starter, some are a 10 minute job for total R&R. Then there is the rust and corrosion thing.

Re: merc starter

Mercruiser superseded the number, don't have a clue why, may be a new method of packing or a new supplier, or a starter change. Sierra, however, probably didn't notice and hasn't found out what changed. So they don't show the new number. It's not Mercs fault, they show their new number.
