Hi all , im a newbie on here so please dont shoot me down in flames 
I have just bought a boat with a what im led to believe a Merc 60 circa 1987 , on testing the engine (in water I might add) , I found the tell tale "Pee" pipe was very inactive so on a quick shut down and a quick search would have me thinking the impeller was shot , so after a short time I had the lower unit off and accessed the water pump to find a very sad and worn looking impeller and burnt out housing.
Well thats not the issue as I have ordered a complete kit from Ebay ( Please dont tell me that was a bad move) The problem is the plastic cam from the gear selector happened to fall off from the splined shaft when I removed the lower unit and what I would like to know is the correct procedure and oreintation it needs to be at before I re-assemble the unit to the leg.
I know Im a total mong and should`nt of held it upside down , but thats what I did .
