Muffs vs Garden Hose connection

My Suzuki 140 has a connection for a Garden hose to wash out the engine. I believe this is typically used after saltwater use. I was wondering if you can also use this to run the engine when it is out of the water? Do I need to use muffs instead of directly connecting the hose to the engine?

Thanks,
Jeff

Im no expert but I believe you are correct in your thinking, the hose is for immediate flushing w the engine off. The muffs need to be used when running the engine out of water or the waterpump may starve for water and be damaged.
