Hey guys,

I have a older 35hp mercury outboard. Probalby around a 1989... it has brown mercury decals if that helps. The bendix does not seem to go up all the way to turn the flywheel over. Sometimes if I tap in with a hammer it will work. I greased it and it still seems to give me trouble. Would the spring be bad? or would I need a new starter? where would you find a new one for this old of a motor? Thank you!!

Re: Bendix sticking, not going up all the way to hit the flywheel

Three things come into play with this issue (listede in the order of probability). 1) Clean the spiral grooves in the shaft that the bendix rides up and down in. A burr or grease prevents proper operation. 2) A weak/discharged battery cannot make the starter spin fast enough to raise the bendix fully. 3) Starter needs rebuilding.. Your local auto electric shop (starter/alternator rebuilder) can do this cheaper than a new starter.

Don't use grease if that's what you used. Clean and spray with WD-40 or equivalent.
