I have a 1997 40 horse johnson vro that a mechanic changed fuel pumps on from a vro to regular. I now mix my own 50/1
fuel and he cut and plugged the vro oil take up. I cannot get it to start cold period unless I spray a little starter fluid and it starts right up. Once started it seems to start the rest of the day and runs like a top.
Bulb is firm,
when I pull primer lines from primer solenoid at carbuator and push in choke I have fuel at both.
Please help,

Having fuel at the primer hose endings when pushing the key in guarantees fuel being delivered to the leaf valves, crankcase, and combustion chambers.... the engine should run.

Note that starter fluid has no lubrication qualities and should not be used. Use premix from a spray bottle instead if necessary.

Proper starting method: Pump primer bulb up hard, apply a slight bit of throttle UNLESS the engine is equipped with the "Fast Start" feature. Turn key to the START position and hold the key in to activate the primer solenoid UNTIL the engine fires and starts, at which point the key is released to the RUN position.
