I need a kicker/trolling motor for my boat its a 17ft aerocraft (similar to a starcraft) aluminum boat. it weighs about 1200lbs. Im seeing a few of the mid 70s early 80s 2hp johnson motors for sale for good prices but are these an ok choice for a trolling/backup motor for a boat my size? thanks

2 hp for a 1200 lb. bot is awfully small. I would say that you should use at least a 7-15 hp motor for a kicker/backup.

I agree. My boat is also aluminum and virtually the same size and weight as yours, I used a 4 hp kicker for 2 years but found it wasnt enough. I just upgraded to an 8hp this year.
Keep in mind that a kicker motor is dual function, trolling and also for emergency use if and when your main motor fails and 2 hp may not get you to shore on a windy day.

I had a 76 2hp Evinrude I ran on a square stern canoe. One time I clamped it on my my 15' Deep V Starcraft Caravelle just to see what it'd do. Barely moved it around.

Thanks for the responses. I will be on the lookout for at least a 6hp+ now.
