Hello,

I have one Johnson 1962 40hp and one Evinrude 1968 18hp motor and both are manual shift. The manual mentions OMC Type C lubricant for the lower unit's gearcase. However it is hard to find nowadays. I am just wondering if Pennzoil Marine 80W90 Gear Lube found in Wal-Mart can be used instead? If not, what other brands can be used?

Thanks a lot in advance!

The Pennzoil will work just fine.

Thanks a lot for the replies!

I just went to a Super Walmart. All they have is QuickSilver Marine Gearcase Lube. I am wondering if it is ok for my motors?

Thanks,
Andrew

As long as it is either 80W90 or 90w it is fine. The Quicksilver gear lube is good.

Type C is for electric shift motors only. Any marine gearlube for mechanical shift motors is fine.

Type C is now called Premium Blend and is only recommended for the electic shift and electro-hydraulic shift motors.

For your "oldies" a marine 90 will work or you can use the newere Evinrude gear oils such as HPF-XR and HPF-Pro.
