Engine stalls

have a 1977 evinrude 85hp; took it out last weekend it started out ok. but when I stopped to fish I cut the motor off; the boat started drifting and I tried starting the motor, but after it started, the engine would stall whenever I 'd put it in forward or reverse. Had to use trolling motor to get bach to shore. Also after getting the motor out of water, I notice that I could spin the propeller with my hand.... is that normal? What else could be wrong; took prop off and there was some fishing line around the shaft but otherwise everything looked okay.
Any suggestions?

sounds like you need to take carb off and clean it thoroughly.sounds like it is running out of fuel.start with that then see what happens.was the propellar in neutral?
