Ok....out on vacation last week my boat started to have an issue. usually it would start just fine but sometimes it would give a loud click and i'd turn the key off and next time it would be fine. I've had the clicking issue on previous boat and it has always been the starter or the solenoid.
My new to me boat is a volvo set up with the relay. I've been trying to diagnose the problem using Don S's sticky but have a couple of questions.
first....the problem is still very intermittent...I'm getting voltage at terminal A but not at terminal B when the starter is cranked. (but i did not get just the clicking sound when we bumped the starter)
second....(and this might sound dumb) these tests need to be done with the relay out correct? the relay is set in there so there would be no way to test the system with it in.
I'd like to get this handled as i have been stranded before out on the water with a bad starter and do not want to be there again.
this is a 5.0Gi PWTR engine
