Installing tach on 1998 Merc 75 hp

Hello, I have a 1998 mercury 75 hp 2 stroke that I'd like to install a tach on it, and found out today from my dealer that they want $75 for the wire harness for it..If the Signal wire is gray, can I not just tap into it along with a ground wire to make it operate...then another wire to have the backup light work too?? Thank you in advance..Ernie

You can get the harness right here at i-Boats a lot cheaper. But to answer your question, yes you can tap into the proper wires to get it to work. The tan wire for signal, tap into the purple wire going to the ignition switch for power, and a ground. You can tap into the lights for it if needed.
