Tach doesn't work on my 77 1150 thunderbolt

I turn the key on and the guage has power as the needle pegs to the right and just stays there.
any ideas as to how to figure outif the gage is bad or I need to check for a connection somewhere?

First thing is do you have a thunderbolt tach...it will be stamped TBolt on the back if it is...determining what type of tach you have is the first step, because that will determine how it is wired in to the engine electronics..

Don, The gauge pegs at zero right? it should....Do you have ground hooked to it? What kind of Tach?

do not know the brand yet I will be looking tonite. No, 6000+ rpm too many when she isn't running. A white wire and a black go thru to the plug that goes into the remote control box. It has a black face and no name on it. However there are 4 white dashes for decoration on it at 12,3,6,9 o'clock positions.
