My manual for my 77 15hp advises against it says " harm may" occur to the rectifier. So I don't run it without battery connected.

Hi,
You can attach a 12 volt tail light bulb to the cable that went to the battery to provide a load for the rectifier, this will simulate a load like the battery, and then you won't have to lug a 12 volt automobile battery around. Leroy has commented that the charge coil for these engines causes the magneto plate to be pulled towards the flywheel magnets and wear out the magneto plate bushing, causing it to become sloppy and then the timing gets erratic. If you do not intend to use the charging feature, I would pull the flywheel and remove the alternator charging coil to aleviate this problem. The rest of the charging system, including the rectifier will then be dissabled.
