Re: How to get your trailer to stop being a Jerk????.
So, now that I have no lake cabin, I have resorted to trailering my 18 footer, and noticed that it jerks back and forth as I am driving. This can be a pain over long distances. ( I have to now drive 1 ? to 2 hours to get to ?boatable? water.) Can this damage your tow vehicle ( I have a Colorado, I-5) I wonder if this is due to the fact that I have a receiver hitch, vs the old style hitch that did not remove. It?s a single axle trailer that came with the boat (?03 bayliner).
Is there something to eliminate the Jerk/ reduce it?
Hello -
This could mean numerous amount of things .
Does the ball mount you own a aftermarket brand and are you installing it into a factory made hitch ?
Have you checked if you have the correct ball mount ( Rise or drop ?) Measure the upper portion of your hitch down to the ground and write that measurement down and then go back over to your trailer as if it was in the tow level position . Take that tape measure and stick it into the coupler and measure that distance down to the ground . So for example : if you were to measure 20" with the truck and 15" with the trailer ( you know you should seek a ball mount with a 5 inch drop ) . If those numbers were reversed (you would need a 5 inch rise ) .
Have you also taken a look at the springs on the trailer ? Are they overslung or underslung ? I.E above or under the axle ? Timbern company makes a excellent product to cushion the ride . They call it the silent ride . Here is a link for the product .

What kind of braking style do you have on the trailer ? Electric ? Hydralic ? Disc ?
How fast are you towing this trailer ? Are you getting sway problems too ? Have you considered a weight distribution kit ?
Last thing , make sure you have the correct hitch for this trailer you are towing . Always take into consideration that the trailer tongue weight cannot be in excess of the rating of the hitch . If your hitch is rated at 6000 lbs , take 10 percent of that . that would determine your TW on what the hitch could handle .
