25hp Loose Prop (not thru-prop exhaust)

Guys,

Prop nut does not align for the cotter pin when snug. It seems looser than I think a prop should be (I'm a novice with boat motors). Should I use a shim washer so the prop nut gets snug when the holes line up? How tight should the nut be? Right now it goes on finger tight then backs off 1/8 turn or so to get the holes lined up.

Thanks,
Byron

Hi CillyB. My '60's era 10 hp and 20 hp are the same way. There's a bit of play between the prop and where the prop nut cone needs to be to align with the cotter pin hole, but I've never had an issue with it. I would just leave it as is unless you notice it causing a particular problem.

Just doesn't seem like a wobbly prop can be good for the splines.
