start but won't run

I have a 81 volvo penta aq260a and it will start but when I turn the key to run it stops I checked the switch and it is ok I can hook a wire from the battery to distributor and keep it running. just wondering if there may be a safety that won't let it keep running when running oil pressure ok water temp ok and it runs good just bought this boat its a 2687 carver

Do you have a lanyard kill switch that may not be installed?

With your test meter, start at the coil and follow the purple wire back to the ignition switch to find where you loose power. Could be nothing more than corroded terminal in a connector.

Those symptoms sound like the ballast resistance circuit for the coil has failed, either due to the resistor itself failing or a wiring problem. The coil will only get voltage during cranking in this situation.
