A boat dealership has a 1997 evinrude 90 hrs motor for 1500$ but one of the carbs has a leak and needs replaced. My question is, is this a common problem for this type of motor with the plastic carbs? The motor itself is super clean and has all new gaskets. There are a couple of places on Ebay that may have the carb. Thanks in advance.

The float bowl likes to warp and on the side of the bowl there is a small brass insert that likes to leak too.

the carb maybe leaking out of the hole in the bowl that is plugged with a brass ball. I have three of those motors and they all have at least one carb that is leaking out of that spot...

course with people over torquing the screws to the plastic bowls, they could very well be warped and leaking there...or both

check it out..... well you cant really see the spot i am talking about on the port carbs, but you can see it on the starboard carbs

good luck

Thanks for the responses, does anyone think that this is a good deal for this motor? Or should I pass it by considering all the problems associated with the carbs. Are there viable fixes out there for the carbs? Or are there non plastic replacements available?
Thanks.

There are a lot of OMC motors out there with the plastic carbs. I have heard of some leaks, but have not had any issue myself. Before you replace the carb, make sure the inlet needle and seat seal properly and floats are set properly. Gaskets are new?

Well the power head looks like it has all new gaskets, as far as the carbs I'm not sure. The mechanic at the boat place said that the one carb had a crack and was causing that cylinder to flood out. So the plastic carbs look like they're in wide use and should not be a deal breaker if I could find a replacement. This motor would probably be 3500 to 4000$ if not for the broke carb but they said 1500$ as is, but if they cant find the replacement, then I'm not sure that I could.
Thanks for your input

Those carbs are all over the place. Many many of them out there.
I just sold a 2000 V6 Johnson carbed motor (basically the same engine as yours with 2 addl. cylinders) for 2700 bucks, and I felt very very lucky to have gotten that for it.

Like chris1956, I have not seen a warped bowl on these carbs either.
No way is that 90hp is worth 3500 to 4 grand.

My 2 cents.

make sure you do a compression check with 2 different guages, and check it several times..... because AS IS, means AS IS...so its up to you to find what IS...IS

gaskets mean the motor was taken apart!!! could have been rebuilt and it didnt work out so great.

other wise that motor is probably worth at least $2500

Thanks for all the responses, will probably pass on the motor unless they either fix it or drop the price on the thing. I Would like to have a motor that i can trust. Lake Texoma here in Oklahoma is a big lake! (well not so much lately its down quite a bit because of severe drought).
