Hey guys, got an escort trailer for 1995 bayliner. This past weekend I noticed that a piece of padding was missing. It is the small crescent shaped carpeted board that is attached to the trailer wheel well in-between the trailer and the boat to protect the hull from hitting metal on the trailer. Any idea what this piece is called and any idea where to get a replacement? Thought about making one cause I don't want to wait for weeks for one from the Internet. Boating stores and marina has turned up nothing so far. Help?!

You may want to post this in the Trailers & Towing section, but I know what you are talking about, have no idea what it's called though.

Good luck!

Re: Mystery pad on boat trailer

Maybe a stupid question, but is that part really necessary? On my trailer (tandem) I could never hit the wheel fenders even if I wanted to (but did look at that carpeted part a few times before I realized it was more for cosmetics).

If you do not have it already, you might consider putting a pair of "trailer guides" (small vertical posts) at the tail end of the trailer to guide the boat in correctly. Then you both get it centered correctly on the trailer when retrieving as well as protects boat from hitting anything.

If totally out, sorry, but hard to help w/o photos. :)

Re: Mystery pad on boat trailer

I went to a boat dealership and they told me it is a wheel well runner pad. My boat could contact the wheel well if these pieces are not there, although when trailered properly the boat doesnt not rest on them. The boat shop told me it would be about $150 plus having to leave the boat there for at least a day - OR - take a piece of deck board (b/c they are specially treated for harsh weather conditions and about the same width) and use the remaining one as a "stencil" to cut two new ones. Glue and staple some quality boat carpet on it, which i also got from the boat dealership. They sold me a high quality, large piece of scrap from a carpeting job for $15. Will post pics this afternoon to the thread when I get home and do the job.

Thanks for the help and the interest fellas!

Re: Mystery pad on boat trailer

Let me add here. I have a 96 year model trailer with the same wheel well inside protecters that you are talking about. They are nothing but marine grade plywood with carpet glued and stapled to them and mounted to the inside of the wheel well. They do more than protect the boat when loading. They also keep any road grime and rocks from slinging up onto the boat when it's being towed down the road. You really need them in place all the time. Mine are oringinal and are in great shape. If I am off center the bottom edge of the boat might bump them so they are nice to have as it would probably scratch the gel coat on the metal fenders. I will also say the "trailer guides" like "wellcraft19" talked about are a great investment. They really help to get the boat on the trailer straight every time. Just get the nose in between them and power it on with no troubles. You will be glad you have them on those windy days when the ramp is 10 deep with boaters waiting to get their own boats out of the water.

Here is a pic of my set up with the trailer guides mounted. It was taken with a older cell phone a few years back so the quality of the pic is not real good.
