Merc 9.8 water pump

I recently purchased a 1982 9.8 that qhad not been run in a couple years. After checking everything out I put it on my boat and ran it for about an hour on the river. When I took it out later, it would not pump water out the pee hole. I took it to a mechanic who completely replaced the water pump. It does not pump water. We have blown air all the way thru the motor and lower unit to assure no blockage. Anyone have any ideas?

My 2 cylinder's water pump drive key was undersized/worn allowing the pump to remain stationary whilst the drive shaft rotated. Look for shiny brass, if it's not turning with it the drive shaft will polish the brass.
