I recently was given an old Glastron boat with a 1973 Merc 850 on it. After pulling it out of the woods, it sat for approx. 8 years in northern Vermont, I found that the lower unit is cracked. I tried to find info on line about a replacement but they are expensive and I am not sure what other mercury outboards might be comparable. I want to search for an old motor for a replacement but I am unsure what other units might work. As I work on it, I also might have other questions. I turned the motor over by hand so it is not frozen. Can someone please steer me in the right direction. Thank you, Rich

Once you have a part number go to boats.net, plug in the part number and it will generate a "where used" list of other mercs using the same part.

The crack is on the lower round part of the gear housing and is sticking out. Haven't really check what type of metal it is. It sure would be nice if I could have it welded. I will check into it with a marine welder that worked on a cracked pontoon.
Thank you carholme. Rich

I went there and found the part number then went to boats.net or boats.com and found the other years that are compatible. Thank you rcb130 and carholme.
