I don't see a 70hp listed in 1971, what's your model number? You could use a timing light and check each plug wire to see if you are loosing spark. You could use a squirt bottle with fuel in it and spray into each carb and see if it starts to run properly. Just a couple of ideas to get you started.

Thought it was a fuel problem but changed the line from the tank to the motor with a new primer bulb. Tried out on the water to pump the bulb didnt help put new fuel pump on didnt help. Pulledthe flywheel looking for points but there are none that I can find

I owned a 71 60hp rude for about 12 years. the only problems i ever had with the engine were the ignition, coil and amplifier went out every 4 or 5 years and the symptoms that precedded their failure varied greatly.

Yes, the stator has to come off, just 4 screws if I remember correctly.

Removed stator cleaned points and regaped to .010 cleaned stator and rotor still the same problem losing spark at higher rpms ok till about 1500 rpm's after that the higher the rpm's the more the less spark you get out of the coil causing misfire. Is there a way to test the control mod or coil? I also seen here on iboats where someone posted that they used a set of points and condencer from a koler single cylinder engine and converted the electronic enginition but I can't find it again does anyone have this knowledge or seen it on iboats and could tell me where to find it.

Did you ever resolve this, I have simular fault and still no idea as to the cause.
Replaced - stator, coils, leads, plugs, Stripped and cleaned carbs, replaced fuel line filters and pump.
Still same result soon as I try to push for to much throttle is breaks down and missfires.
this can be noticed when you just open the throttle from idle in gear, it will missfire straight away or if you bring up so far. it will then get upto about 15knots of cruise on calm waters. increasing throttle just causes missfire.

Any advise ? "short of a stick of dynamite"

As long as you're replacing parts, have you tried a different power pack yet ??

Yes, only thing that hasn't been changed is the timmerbase, I was advised that if this was faulty then it wouldn't run period. So replaced only stator, that was after I replaced the PowerPack/CDI unit.
Was hoping that somebody on these threads would reply with what the issue was, maybe the CDI is faulty its just odd that it seems to be RPM / Load related.
