Hello, i am trying to get my deceased brothers boat running. he drained the lower unit last year, and was wondering where the fill plug is? it is a 1965 18hp evinrude. thanks
there's two holes, One at the very bottom and one up on the side of the lower unit. You have to pump the fluid in the bottom one until it comes out the top hole. And be careful not to take the shift lever screw out of the bottom. It's close to the fluid screw but smaller and usually a philips head screw.
That two screw thing is probably your water pickup. Look on the other side of the lower unit, You'll see just one bigger slot type screw towards the front of the lower unit. and you can use omc lower unit lube or any 85/90 weight gear oil.
Hi restoring his dream. Sorry for your loss. Here's a diagram of your motor. You want to remove parts #44 on page 12 to fill the gear case with oil. You should also see the words DRAIN/VENT on the housing next to them. You want to remove them both and pump in 80-90w gear lube oil from the bottom, DRAIN hole until you see the oil come out of the top, VENT hole. Then, replace and the VENT screw and quickly remove the pump and replace the lower DRAIN screw. Here's a pic of the pump and oil you'll need. There are many brand and you should be able to get all you need at Wal-Mart and places like that.
