Have a 1998 Evinrude 15 HP 4 stroke motor that overheated at the lake yesterday. Maintenance records show 4 years since I had the impellar changed. Called shop, but earliest they can look at it is August 31. Is this a job one with a few mechanical skills can perform or is it best to leave to the experts? I have a maintenance manual but my specific motor, nor step by step procedures are not included. Any thoughts or ideas will be appreciated.

You didn't post a model number so I looked at the first one I found. It looks strait forward, disconnect the shift linkage, remove the bolts holding the lower unit on and it should drop down for you.

You need to drop the lower unit about 1", then you will see the shift linkage connector. Completely remove at least one of the screws, and lower unit should fall down. If you use that engine a lot for slow trolling, make a habit of changing the impeller every year!

If the impellar is all broken up, make sure you find all the pieces.
