Picked this engine up real cheap at a yard sale but cannot find any numbers on this thing besides individual part numbers. From the part numbers I know it is an Evinrude or Johnson but cant pin point the year. Want to make sure I get the mixture (50:1)? right before I try to start it.
some of the part numbers
308482
304781
308357
378613
Thanks

Re: Need help identifying older 20hp

thx a lot i can tell you know your stuff...I think i have a bad water pump so that info will help me find a replacement. Is this type of engine suppose to pee out of those three exhaust holes? I opened the thermostat cover and it was dry?

Hi 88. I have a very similar looking motor and it's actually a '66 20 hp FD-20C, and I'm pretty sure have something very similar. You can double check yours by looking at the ID tag on the transom clamp. It's probably been painted over, but it should be riveted on there. If it is a mid-late '60's model, you'll want to run 24:1. Looks like it's electric start/generator and electric choke too. Here are some handy links for getting her running.

It looks alot like my 1972 18HP, except for the fuel pump... I have the same style pump on my 1965 Evinrude.

Looks like the numbers have been removed off of the round silver plug on the power head?

After closer inspection your right tx1961whaler no numbers there or on the bracket or anywhere there are suppose to be numbers for identification. I have had it in storage for a long time decided to finally take a look at it. Starts and runs good but needs water pump. I'll start searching for those directions but I believe it is a Johnson 1970's model. Hopefully the impeller will not be hard to locate.

I know I wish I knew more about these engines before I bought it! Now i'm starting to realize why it was so cheap but the guy was like 65yrs old and seemed honest it didn't even cross my mind at the time.

its a 67. The color of the powerhead gives it away. Johnson only used the tropic green color for 1 year, 1967. It has to be pre-1968 because the rewind starter plate of that era changed to the evinrude style in 68.

don't know about your state, but in my state it's a felony to not have a serial number tag on a motor. Might be a good idea to get one.

I think resonator is right. It looks virtually identical to my '66 except for the power head color. I would also try to get some kind or ID number of some sort. Without one it's basically like driving a car with no VIN. Not good :/

All those old 18/20/25's were the same 22 cubic inch block. Easy to work on and great engines. The impeller is easy to get (any OMC dealer) and change. And after 1964 they are all 50:1 mixing ratio.

Yep, I think the old 22 cube motors were like the second best OMC motors ever built. I favor the old Big Twin/Larks because of the non friction lower units
