I am fairly certain I have a blown head gasket after diagnosing my engine problems.

I own a 1989 Johnson 90HP SPL Engine.

I will be working on the boat today and allready have a replacement gasket ready to go but I have a few questions.

Do I need any type of Head Gasket Liquid sealent?

Because the head has its own screws to secure on the cover and gasket cover...I only need to remove the longer screws that remove the head with the gasket right?

I found that other boats head bolts are torqued to 18-20 ft-pounds. Is that good?

Is there anything else i need to know...right now i plan on removing four bolts taking the head off...replacing the gasket...then bolting back on.

Am I missing something?

Re: Head Gasket Replacement HELP!!!

Removing the head bolts, clean the block and heads completely clear of old gasket debris. If you had an overheat issue I would have a machine shop check the heads and block to ensure they are not warped.

Bolt the heads back on with the new gaskets. You will have to check your specific engine service manual but most of the time they do not require any gasket sealant and the torque is 18-20 ft/lbs with a specific sequence.

Re: Head Gasket Replacement HELP!!!

Engine never overheated...my alarms still work on both sides.

I have a bolt pattern from a 135 hp johnson...im assuming its the same (engine build looks the same)

I found out how to check if the head is warped (im hoping its not)

So im good to go?

Make sure the rubber water diverters are in place before you reinstall the heads.
