I have a 1990 Wellcraft Vortec V-6 fuel injected motor with Mercruiser. It starts and idles fine, and you can even rev it in neutral, but when I shift into Forward gear it automatically dies. Occasionally I can quickly shift into reverse without it dying. Any suggestions?

Sounds like the lower shift cable needs to be replaced. Mine did the same thing. Had it replaced and it shifts like it should now. If you have it done you should go ahead and replace all the belows while the drive is off. Inspect the gimble bearing and the U-joints.

You probably need a new lower shift cable. When they get corroded and stiff to move, they activate the shift interrupt switch when they shouldn't and it stalls the engine.
Read this thread, it will help you understand the system.
