1996 90 hp seapro, Stalls out when you put in gear..

I recently purchased a 90hp evinrude and have a hard time getting it to stay running when put in gear. Has anyone had this problem and if so what fixed it?? Never worked with boat motors before but have loys of experiance with car, motorcycle ect..

1st assure self it is running on all cylinders. And that it is up to operating temperature. my 1st guess at stalling when loaded at idle would be idle too low, and/or fuel mix too lean, and/or timing off.
if you move it into gear and smoothly accelerate does it still stall? I ask this because most outboards the timing advances 1st then the carb begins to open... this might let us know if timing issue is possible cause.
when it stalls, does it cough/sneeze or just stop? does it try a few times to keep going or just like the key turned off?
Also not to sound smart alec... but suggest you invest in a factory repair/service manual for it... and steer clear of seloc manuals and their like.
