I have a Gen V mercruiser that looks as though it's leaking from the front main seal. There is oil in the bilge directly underneath the pulleys. My question is this something I can replace without special tools once I get past the cover? Or could it possibly be from somewhere else?

Is there a way I can find out which one is leaking or do I have to do the removal and replace both?

Might be able to tell once you get the harmonic balancer off. If it's the seal you could replace it without removing the cover. Look on the balancer where the seal rides and see if it has a bad groove from the seal. They make micro repair sleeves which slide on the balancer over that area if needed. Also there are 2 bolts going up through the oil pan and into the timing cover from the bottom. Be sure their tight (snug). Hopefully it is the seal and you won't need to remove the cover.
