I just inherited a bass boat from my father and I have no clue about maintaining the thing. It has a 1989 mercury classic fifty 45hp outboard and i was wondering if anyone could let me know what I need to do to it before I put it in the water. It's been sitting since last summer so it's still winterized.

Check compression, change spark plugs, change lower unit oil, test spark. And before you put it in the water, get a muff to attach your hose to it and you can run it in the driveway, at Idle speed only. Don't let the rpm's get any higher than idle while you are running it on the hose. Also, in the event that you do get it to start, and you don't see water coming out of the tell-tale almost immediately after the motor fires and starts running, turn it off. Since it has been sitting for a year, you probably need to replace the impeller.
