S/n comes up as:

40 40 3-cyl 0T602077 0T803938 2003 USA

From here:

http://www.marinshopen.se/Motorer/O...Mercury2takt3cyl2555hp/tabid/485/Default.aspx

It is a model:

1A40412AD MERCURY 2003 40EFI

Parts listing:

http://www.crowleymarine.com/mercury-outboard/6995.cfm

Service Manual P/N: 90-883064R02

http://1manual.com/Mercury manuals/Service Manual PDFs/FourStroke/883064/cover.pdf

You must have Adobe Acrobat reader installed to use this manual. If you scroll down to the lower part of the opening page, you will see the various engine components in red. Click on the one you want and when the first page opens, click on the "Save As" icon at the top LH corner of the page and you can save it to your computer.

Look at Section 6A, "Non Bigfoot Gear Housing", page 6A13 (Four Stroke models) and you will see where you have to undo the shift shaft retainer at the top end. When you shift the retainer to the left, you are disconnecting the shift shaft.

Let us know if this is clear for you.

OK..looked at it and have tried to do it...Is there a trick??
Have not been able to get past opening up the retainer clip.

In neutral, how does the retainer move to the left??

Any ideas??

gr;

Once the retainer is opened up, it should just slide to the left. Apply some light pressure from the right to get it to slide to the left. Should actually move with fingers only but you may be hung up on a burr or something.

Thanks Gerry...It came out SO easy that I thought something was wrong...
Ipeller replaced and new seals.....all back together and runs good on the hose.
Sea trials in a few..
