Trea, might help to explain how the solenoid works so when you are working with wires you can reverse engineer yourself and see what should be where.
The connection A in the diagram will be the largest wire coming to the starter from the battery and should be +.
The smaller wire that connects to the smaller terminal activates the solenoid, which makes the connection between A + C internally, thus causing the starter to turn over. This would be the smaller wire that is sent juice when the key is turned all the way to start the engine.
If in doubt, take a light tester and hook it to one of the smaller wires (purple or yellow), and ground the other end. Have a friend turn the key over as if he was going to start it. One of these two wires should get 'hot' when the key is turned over. This would connect to B on the solenoid(Should be labeled S on the solenoid).
Was the starter smoking or one of your smaller gauge wires? If a smaller gauge wire was connected to A then that can cause smoke when that small gauge wire tries to deliver the needed current for the starter. Your large cable coming from + off the battery should be connected to A.
