Novice needing good advice for purchasing a used bowrider or deck boat

I am brand new to the forum and am overwhelmed! Great place! I am looking to purchase a pre-owned bowrider or deck boat to serve me in two locations. One is a small (200 acre) fresh water lake and the other is the bay near Ocean City, MD. I need seating for 10+ and want an I/O V8 strong enough to pull skiiers, tubers, etc while keeping a number of folks in the boat. I believe 22' is what I will need with a 5.0 or 5.7. Any thoughts on what I should consider, and can I accomplish this for under $20K with a trailer?

The Yamaha jet boats seem to be all over in OC. They seem pretty ideal to me for the sometimes shallow bay. Any reason for the I/O preference? I'm pro-outboard anyway but definitely so for saltwater.

Me and my boat will be in OC in about 54 hours, but who's counting :D

Re: Novice needing good advice for purchasing a used bowrider or deck boat

Just sold my two wave runners and hated having to pull the seaweed out of the the intake grates all the time which is why I am avoiding a jet boat. I had them 7 years and jumping off in the water to do this was never easy or fun. As far as I/O, I am a car guy at heart and have a better understanding of a V8 and could most likely help myself out in the event of an on water problem.

The deck boat layout will accomodate more people comfortably than a bowrider of the same size. There's quite a disparity between ocean bay and small lake. It would help if you tailored your choice to the one you'll use most frequently. The 20 K price point is doable if you're looking at boats that are several years old.

You're asking for a lot out of a boat if you're wanting to carry 10 people and still ski/tube. It's almost like you need a big high performance (straked) tritoon boat with a large engine. They are pretty high dollar items, even used.

Boattrader.com, IBoats.com, Craigslist.com and EBayMotors.com are probably the best places to look. At least you can get a relativity of the retail market, and be better educated on what's available.

We have a vaca home on a lake, and in-laws on the bay, so we will use the boat 50/50 and keep it on the trailer when not in use. It will get moved from one location to the other quite a bit.

Sorry about the confusion, I do not need 10 on board while towing, it would most likely be just a few but I want the people option for cruising.

My vote goes to deck boat. The Hurricanes are nice.

How about Stingray? There is a 2000 22' 5.0 EFI near me for sale with a trailer, head, transom shower, bar sink, covers, s/s prop, and 200 hours. Asking $13.9???

Re: Novice needing good advice for purchasing a used bowrider or deck boat

Remember it is 11 years old and counting. Look it over really well, or have a service do it if you dont feel comfortable doing it yourself. My 01 started out as a great boat, but turned into a money pit. I have the 5.0 EFI in my current Monterey 20ft, and it is not bad, but test drive that 22ft boat to make sure it is enough power.

Stingray is an inexpensive boat new, make sure that is a good price. Seems a bit high, but I dont know what Stingrays are selling for used.

A 22' deckboat or bowriders going to keep you in business for a long time. My buddy has a 25' four winns deckboat and I've seen him put 13 people on it and pull a tuber and wakeboarder. But boy does he gripe about gas consumption. After hes done with the water toys he drops em off at the dock and goes for a long cruise and stops for lunch. The best of both worlds!

I also found a 2001 Sea Ray 210 Sundeck 5.7L that is spotless for $19K. More money, but newer, better brand, and larger motor. Worth it?? It is $5k more.....24 hours on motor though!

since you have water access on the bay, and as you mentioned, you aren't likely to take the whole gene pool out at once. I'd opt for quality over quantity--get a smaller boat that handles well and comfortably carries 6, rated for 8-9. 10 people on a small boat just isn't fun, and neither is a lot of tubing behind a pig.

Buy the boat for the bay, and make it fit in the lake. Look for a hull design that will handle your bay conditions. And with a boat instead of a pair of jet skis, you will likely want to fish. Therefore, avoid carpet.

Also, I see people pulling tubes/skis behind boats that are too large or the wrong design, practically speaking. It always looks like a struggle, especially teaching someone to ski or wake board, and having to constantly turn a big boat back around. Pontoons are the most ridiculous in this regard. So if watersports are a major priority, get a boat that's made for it.

I live on the water, too. it's a whole lot more fun to leave the party on the dock and come and go in the boat, taking turns tubing or whatever. You will be able to get a much nicer boat with that strategy.

BTW I took my cousin (both of us in 50's, good size) and 5 older teens (2 small girls, one medium, 2 beefy boys) tubing behind a 21' center console 150 HP 2 stroke--did fine. Might want 175 if I did it all the time. Look for something like that--very versatile family boat and made for the bay like yours. Rated for 8-9 (can't remember exactly).

I'd want to know why it was repowered, when and by whom. Did it sink?

Its 10 years old. I had to repower my 01 last summer. Not surprising at all. The pricetag seems in line too. There is a 00 180 Sundeck at the place I bought my boat going for $13900. And an 05 205 sport for $19995.

Do you have to have it now, for this season? If not, you will find prices a lot lower in the off seasons.

No, I do not need it now but worry about having the ability to water test before buying. I am a cash buyer without a trade so I should be able to find a deal. Right?

I forget you guys get that cold stuff up there. Maybe later in the season then. You certainly want to test drive it for sure. Sometimes you can get a better deal with cash, especially if you come across a private owner that needs cash. Dealers couldnt care less, in fact sometimes they actually get kickbacks from loans, so they will not always cut as good a deal for cash.

Re: Novice needing good advice for purchasing a used bowrider or deck boat

Any thoughts on this:

1999 Cobalt 220, Excellent condition, 7.4L EFI Volvo Penta dual prop, 310HP, 55MPH, Freshwater cooling, many options, 2 sets of bow/cockpit tonneau covers, mooring cover, running cover. Always stored under cover on a boatel rack, washed and waxed 2-3x/yr. gelcoat, upholsty and canvas in exceptional condition. About $6k recently spent on new exhaust manifolds/risers, starter, power steering pump, blower, cables, batteries, etc. I have all records from new. You won't find another 12 year old Cobalt in this condition! (A new 22 Cobalt w/similar engine runs about $70k).

I think he will take $16.5K
