1985 Mercruiser 3.0L M# MCM 140, SN: 6922598, with Mercarb.

My throttle adjustment has a little slack in it. When I pull the throttle back to idle the idle is too high. If I push on the connecting arm from the carburetor to the throttle cable it will move almost ? inch. Then the idle will be good.

How do I tighten up the slack? Should there be a return spring? The book says to remove the return spring before removing the connecting arm when disassibaling but my carburetor does not have an external return spring.

Thanks,

Bt Doctur,

This helps but, my boat has an L shaped linkage between the throttle cable and the carb. It seems the slack is a combination of some slack in the cable and some in the linkage.

I will tighten up the cable as recommended and see how it does.

Thanks,

Looks like I got it. To take the slack out I had to adjust the cable end connector out. It is doing much better and I here at the house.

The real test will be once I get it in the water to see how it does.
