How do you clean a stator? 400 grit?

Hey everyone,

I have a '72 Johnson 85hp. I just removed my flywheel, stator, cap, rotor, but not my breaker point assembly (can't find the anti-reverse spring). Anyway, what should I use to clean the stator with. I was thinking 400 grit sandpaper. There is a little bit of corrosion, the white crusty variety, and minimal surface rust. Also does anybody know the best way to clean the metal surfaces on the inside of the cap?

Any advice would be helpfull. Thank You.
