Water in gas tank

I've gotten water in my gas tank mounted on the back of my pontoon, so much taht the engine won't run on it. I presume it is rain water getting in through the vent. Is it standard practice to keep the vent closed when not in use? I've been keeping it open when not in use to prevent pressure build up when it gets hot.

Normally you should close the vent to keep the gas fresh. However, normally the vents are designed so that water doesn't get in. The gauge fittings are more likely a place for water to get in.

I recommend you siphon some gasoline off the bottom of the tank and put it in a clear container. You should see the water on the bottom of the container. if not, a bit of 2 cycle oil will coor only the gasoline, and the water will look yellow or clear.

Now you can pour off the gas and dump the water.
