My 48 johnson starts to surge after running for a few minutes. I have disassembled and cleaned the the carbs, checked the fuel pump screen, replaced the fuel hose connectors. It will try to run right if I keep pushing on the key (prime pump). Sometimes it will start to run right after running at half throttle. Att the hose connections are tight. What ar the symtoms of a bad fuel pump?

If it runs properly by pushing the primer, it sounds like the high speed orifices in your carbs might be restricted/clogged. You could have a fuel pump problem, try continually squeezing the primer bulb, that will bypass the fuel pump. If the engine runs properly, I would suspect a defective fuel pump.

Re: 48 spl surging

I did squeeze the pump while running and it did help. I will get a new pump this week. I hate to get rid of the motor it has been a real work horse for me. I have it on a homemade 16ft alum flat with a tunnel and it has never been of of the Louisiana swamps.
Thanks.
