This is my first post so please let me know if I leave anything out. Recently purchased a 1992 Johnson 60HP 3 cylinder 2 stroke outboard to go on my 14 ft bass boat. This is my first boat so I'm no expert but have worked on quite a few motorcycles so I feel comfortable with smaller motors and carburetors. The motor was taken off a pontoon boat that had been sitting for 2 to three years. Have no idea if it was properly winterized or how well it was cared for. Was told that when it was last used that it ran great but would not idle for anything. Mounted it on my boat and it idled fine on the garden hose. Took it to the lake and it would not idle and would only run and have any power if I pushed the choke(electric primer) every couple seconds. Took it out of the water. Ran Seafoam as instructed from this forum to do a decarb. Worked like a charm. After the decarb, boat picked up out of the water planed out and hauled butt. Measured the top speed with GPS to show only 32 mph on flat calm lake water. It still would not idle but I decided that wasn't a big deal because I was ready to get some fishing done and explore the lake. The VRO pump had been disconnected by the previous owner. I'm a landscaper so I know how to mix 50:1 and am anal about making sure my mix is as close to perfect as possible. I used 87 octane and Pennzoil Marine Synthetic. Before putting it in the water, I replaced the impeller and gear lube. Had a good steady stream of water from the pee hole. Took it out the third time after getting it to run right. Was in very choppy water because it was windy and lots of traffic from a beautiful but busy Saturday so was constantly going playing with the throttle so the flat bottom boat wouldn't snap in half. Had run about 30 mins down the lake to an island to hang out for a couple hours. Jumped back in the boat to head home and it cranked right up and got under way. Half way back it started to sound like it was running out of fuel. It was a steady deceleration down to what I would call 1/4 to 1/3 throttle. Managed to limp home the rest of the way and get it on the trailer. Was frustrated as heck so waited a couple days to check compression. Before decarb compression was top to bottom 80-85-95. After the motor lost power, compression is now 100-0-100. My question here is first of all is this motor repairable for 200 or 300 bucks or does it need a complete rebuild? Is it the rings and cylinder or just head gasket?Did not find evidence of water on the spark plugs. Any help would be useful. Thanks in advance and I apologize if this was lengthy.
