Force 50 driveshaft seal question

I have a 1988 Force 50hp which I noticed the driveshaft seal upper (the one that goes into the motor on top of the driveshaft) was in 20 pieces when I changed my waterpump recently. Now my question is, how critical is this seal and what does it seal against since it appears I have been running for a while without it. Also, dealer is saying a couple weeks for replacement and I want to use the boat this weekend...

Re: Force 50 driveshaft seal question

It's supposed to keep the top of the spline covered.Keeping the grease inside and keeping the splines greased.
Not absolutley necessary.Just keep the splines lubed.J

Re: Force 50 driveshaft seal question

The driveshaft is stainless and not affected by water. The crankshaft is hardened steel and will rust. The seal helps to keep water out of the splines and prevents rust from cold welding the driveshaft to the crankshaft. Many Chrysler engines before your Force did not have this seal so it is not a critical part. You can run the engine without it, even for extended periods, if you coat the splines with a thin layer of anti-seize to protect both parts.
