1974 50HP Evinrude water in cylinder 1

Hi everyone,

I found this forum and see some great post, so I thought maybe someone can help me out!

I have a 1974 50HP Evinrude 2 stroke. I have water getting in cylinder 1. Compression test are fine and water is peeing well. I have cleaned the carbs and changed the fuel pump. I took the head off and there is a bit of rust in the cylinder, however the head gasket looks fine and no rust around the ring. It starts a bit rough and then runs ok, but there is very low power under load and will die at idle speed and when I put it into gear unless i keep it revved up.

Exhaust cover and cylinder head gaskets are the only places I can think of that would allow water into the cylinders.
I would start by making sure the head is flat and install a new head gasket. Make sure to torque it to spec, run it till it warms up, let it cool down and then retorque the head and see if that cures your problem.

I see the inner and outer gaskets for the exhaust which I am going to replace tomorrow, but what is the baffel?

Some motors have baffels........your motor probably don't......I didn't look at the schematic that close...

It is called exhaust cover inner. 1981 and later the exhaust cover was made intregal with the block.
