Agreed. I guess I'm looking for help finding what I need to get these mismatched things together. I don't even know what's missing & where to get the parts. Any help would be greatly appreciated

have a look at this .What you're doing will not work. You cannot connect the thing in picture 1 directly to the thing in picture 3. Because you do not have a tilt tube, you need one of these http://www.iboats.com/Corrosion-Resi...view_id.192758 bolted to your transom to take the place of it. Then you will also need a steering link bar http://www.iboats.com/T-R-Steering-L...-view_id.40158 (you should be able to find a link bar from ebay or a salvage place much cheaper. There's a list of salvage places in the stickies in the johnson/evinrude section)

I had the same problem with my boat/motor combo. Tomorrow I'll take some pics of my solution and post them.

This is what I did. The end of the steering cable is supposed to go through tilt tube. My old '72 100hp does not have a tilt tube. There is just a bolt. I could not find u-bolts that were long enough. So I just ended up makiing a couple of long u-bolts from some threaded rod and clamped the aluminum tube to the inside of the transom under the transom mounts. The stainless behind the u-clamps is mostly cosmetic. Behind the stainless steel Is a piece of 1/2 in pressure treated plywood acting as a spacer to keep the aluminum tube away from the transom. You can see in the pic that I had to add a couple small pieces of plywood behind the tube because the end of the cable was binding on the transom. Before I clamped the tube tight, I centered the steering wheel and centered the motor.

Ugly but effective.

I mulled over how to do this for over a year. I managed to get the aluminum tube and a swivel bracket to hold it at a boat wrecker, but my splash well is too small to fit the bracket, so I just used the tube and clamped it close enough to the motor that the motor will still tilt up and lock.

The aluminum tube is threaded on one end so that the cable housing will thread onto it. The other end of the tube has a rubber grease/dust sweap. To my surprise, the cable fit very loosely into the tube. I packed it with grease before putting the cable end through. http://www.iboats.com/Aluminum-Supp...5005607--**********.243048697--view_id.192765 http://www.iboats.com/Corrosion-Res...5005607--**********.243048697--view_id.192758
