I recently aquired a 1981 Merc 4.5 hp outboard that I was told "Needed a little work", the seller said it was running but not running well and he had not used it in 3 years.
Based upon his description of the running issues, I figured a good carb cleaning was all that was needed so I bought it and proceeded with the "Waking a sleeping outboard" procedure including a complete carb cleaning. Yesterday I took it to the lake for the first time to see if I could get it running but I had a bit of trouble getting it started when it was cold, once I got it running it seemed to run really well and after it was warm, re-starts were easy. So here's my question... Can someone tell me what the cold starting procedure / sequence is for the motor? It would be great if I could get it started in 5 pulls or less which I think is reasonable for any outboard.
