I have the prop shaft removed, along with the reverse gears and all that, pinion gear nut is off, but the gear wont come off...manual says to pull up on shaift handle and remove, but it feels like its still engaged...do i need to put the prop shaft back in and smack it like I've read with a plastic hammer or what?

Thanks guys!

driveshaft or propshaft? The pinion gear is still engaged into the reverse gear (why I'm pulling apart, it won't shift into neatutral or forward...)

got the pinion out and drive shaft and shift rod. Any reason the housing wont slide out of this thing? I'm worried about pulling the shifter shaft....

it's a 1978 johnson seahorse 75hp. The manual said to pull the propshaft out with forward gear and housing as an assembly, but the prop shaft came out leaving the housing in place...it's not want to slide out very easily.

yeah, shift rod is gone. could it be something where the rod screws in catching the lip, not allowing it to come out? The housing slides up about 3/4", but then it basically gets stuck

what holds the prop shaft to the housing allowing it to be removed as a unit? the prop shaft pulled right out, is it the clutch dog pin? Still trying to get this housing out, but i'm not sure how...pulling on the shaft in the picture isn't working...detent is pressed down
