...ask him when he had it running last and how it ran. Then ask him to take you for a ride to see how it performs. If you can't do that, see if you can hook up muffs to it to start it. Take a compression tester with you and test each cylinder, anything over 100psi on each cyl should be OK and the readings should be within 15% of each other. At the very least, put a wrench on the flywheel nut and see if engine turns. I hope it all works out and you get years and years of enjoyment of of your new rig.

If you can't hear it run or put it on the water then i'd steer clear... Usually means paperweight! and at that price it better be an important piece of paper!
