97 yamaha 200 SS knocks and ticks at idle when i rev it up past 1500 it goes away. Did compression test and all is within 100-112. Check water pump and made sure i pulled up on shaft this time and put wave washers in correctly. I did start motor with lower unit off just for a second and the knock still remains. Engines are regularly maintained. Did notice this motor burns a little more oil than its counter part. please help rodbolt and other yamaha guys.

Re: 97 Yamaha 200hp knock and tick

I had a similar issue at washdown and read up online before riping the motor apart. Turned out that if the primer ball is soft or the motor is running out of fuel you can hear the fuel pump or something making a knocking noise. Not sure if this helps but it's a starting point and helped me a while back. If not you may have to check valve clearances?

Motors with a lot of hours will sometimes develop slack in the piston. This is pretty common among older outboards. Most motors will run for years with this noise. The only thing to watch is your knock sensor, which will limit your rpm range. If this happens to you, it should cost you under $200 to have your knock sensor fixed at any reputable Yamaha repair shop. Good luck and I hope this helps.

Sounds like a wrist pin if you have movement, sure do not want it to come apart
