Had this on last week and have had input from local but would like more info.
I have a 93 Johnson 50 (Vj50tletf) Would not start...so we cut the black yellow wire comming from switch to mag....At this point motor would start but not shut off...
We checked with ohm meter...at the point of cut....and here is what we have.
With wire not cut...Switch in off position shows line grounded (like it should be)
With switch in on position shows not grounded (like it should be)
When tring to start.... we have no spark.
With wire cut we have the same thing but we have spark,
But the motor will not shut off (as the cut wire should be the ground to shut the motor down)
Now here is the new input had local tell me it was a bad CDI...
Im not sure what it is or where it is. We thought the problem might be a problem it a cmod. box that is on back/bottem left side of the motor....(when looking this up online it was called a power pack (175316)
At this price I would like some input on who is right, and am I heading down the right street. Thanks

Re: 93 Johnson Wont start

Sounds like a bad ign switch. I recommend you disconnect battery and test black/yellow to ground with an ohmmeter and see if it shorts to ground when key is in start position.

You may find wiring diaghram on maxrules.com web site. Also, some motors pump +12VDC into power pack when cranking. See if the starter solenoid wire (yellow/red) is alos connected to the powerpack.
